Institute history is the history of foundation and development of cryptographic equipment and se-crecy communication of our country.
The pioneers in the field of cryptography and secrecy communication were academicians V.A.Kotelnikov, A.L. Minz and other great scientists and specialists of post-war time.
On January 21, 1948 in Marfino “Laboratory ¹8” was founded. Based on “Laboratory ¹8” on January 12, 1952 the State Research Institute ¹2 (GosNII ¹2) was founded that was later reorganized to institution “box 37”. It was founded to carry on an investigation in the field of secrecy communication equipment develop-ment.
On January 1, 1955 the institution “box 37” was given new name “The Research Institute for Automatics” (“RIA”). In the fifties and sixties the first generation of cryptographic equipment of our country was developed. This equipment was developed by the following specialists: A.P.Peterson, K.F.Kalachyov, I.S.Neiman, A.M.Nanos, N.B.Petrov, Jur.Jac.Voloshenko, N.N.Naidyonov, Jur.A.Soldatichin, A.M.Vasiljev, A.N.Kabatov, B.A.Nikolaev, G.V.Kukushkin, A.F.Nosov, V.A.Nikitin,V.P.Dementjev and others.
For outstanding achievements in science and engineering “RIA” was decorated with Order of Lenin.
In the eighties special complexes of secrecy communication equipment were implemented.
“RIA” was appointed to be parent body of Russian State Scientific and Industrial Association “Avtomatika” that was established to execute Decree of President of Russian Federation ¹ 371 of 18.03.93. “RIA” was charged with Scientific and Industrial Association management and RGNPO “Avtomatika” was charged with duties of overhead organization relative to independent institutions that are members of Association.
The latest wording of charter of Federal State Unitary Enterprise “The Research Institute for Automatics” was ap-proved.
From 1993 to 2005 special communication equipment family is developed that implements new principles and technologies of cryptographic equipment design. The essence of these approaches consists in imple-mentation of special equipment functional blocks based on digital signal processing methods with subse-quent implementation of each functional block (speech converter, special block, modem) based on real time calculators implemented on digital signal processors. Encryption equipment family was developed intended for export and commercial sale.
